How water jetting actually works
A jetter is a pump, a length of high pressure hose, and a nozzle. The pump drives water down the hose at pressures typically measured in thousands of PSI, and the nozzle converts that pressure into a set of directed jets. Most of the jets face backwards at a shallow angle. Those rear jets do two things at once. They cut and scrub the pipe wall, and their thrust drags the hose forward through the line without anyone pushing it.
The operator feeds the hose in from an access point, works it to the far end of the blocked section, then draws it back slowly. The cutting happens on the way out, not the way in. Pulling back at the right speed is what strips the pipe rather than skating over the top of the build up. Rush that part and you leave a layer behind for the next blockage to key into.
Flow rate matters as much as pressure. Pressure cuts, but litres per minute is what carries the debris away down the line. Why jetting beats an electric eel on old clay pipe
An electric eel is a rotating steel cable with a cutting head on the end. It is a useful tool and we still carry one. What it does, though, is bore. The head follows the path of least resistance and clears a channel through the middle of the blockage. Water starts flowing, the customer sees the sink drain, and the residue that caused the problem is still bonded around the inside of the pipe.
On the earthenware and vitrified clay drains under most of the older housing here, that residue is exactly where the next blockage starts. Clay pipe was laid in short sections with mortared joints, so the internal surface has ridges and mortar snots at every joint. Anything sticky catches on them. An eel passes straight by. A jetter with a rear facing nozzle scours those joint faces clean, so the pipe recovers most of its original bore and runs at proper capacity again.
The other advantage is what happens with roots. An eel cuts the root mass off flush and pushes the pieces down the line, where they can lodge further along. Jetting flushes the cut material out to the main instead of relocating the problem twenty metres downstream.
When jetting is the wrong call on heritage pipework
Water jetting is not appropriate for every drain, and being straight about that saves customers money and damage. Much of the original drainage in this part of Sydney is well over a century old. Clay pipe becomes brittle with age. Mortared joints wash out. Sections crack, sag, or lose their bedding as the ground moves.

Can jetting clear tree roots for good?
It clears them thoroughly, better than cable machines do, but roots return to any drain that is still leaking water at a joint or crack. The water is what draws them back. Is jetting safe for stormwater as well as sewer?
Yes, and stormwater lines often need it more than owners expect. Silt, leaf litter and root fibre build up in downpipe connections and yard drains, particularly under mature street trees. Do I need to be home while you jet the drain?
