The same logic applies to the boiling kettle trick. Pouring boiling water down a blocked kitchen sink softens grease at the top of the line and lets it slump into a colder section further along, where it hardens into a denser plug. It can also be genuinely damaging. Repeated boiling water into an old earthenware line with mortared joints stresses those joints, and if the trap or waste under the sink is plastic, boiling water can distort it.
P traps, further along, and the case against supermarket drain cleaner
The first thing worth knowing is where the blockage sits. A blockage in the P trap directly under the sink affects only that fixture, clears with a bucket and a spanner, and does not come back quickly. A blockage further along the waste line usually shows itself differently. Both sides of a double bowl sink fill, the dishwasher backs up into the sink, water rises in a nearby laundry tub, or the sink gurgles when another fixture drains. Those symptoms mean the restriction is past the trap and needs to be cleared from a proper access point, not from the plughole.
Caustic supermarket drain cleaners are where a lot of small kitchen problems become expensive ones. They are designed to react with and partially dissolve organic matter, and they generate heat while doing it. In a line already full of grease they often clear a narrow channel that closes again within days, and in the meantime the pipe is sitting full of caustic liquid. That is a hazard for whoever opens the trap next, and heat and caustic chemicals are not what you want in ageing earthenware with mortared joints. Repeat dosing over years is a genuine cause of pipe deterioration.

Grease habits that actually work at home
Commercial kitchens are required to run grease arrestors for a reason, and the principle scales down. Keep an old jar or tin by the stove, pour cooling fat and oil into it, and put it in the bin when it sets. Wipe greasy pans out with paper towel before they go anywhere near the sink. Fit a basket strainer to every kitchen sink and empty it into the bin rather than rinsing it through. Scrape plates properly before they go in the dishwasher. Run hot water and a little detergent through the sink after cooking something particularly fatty, which helps carry the residue out of the first few metres rather than leaving it to set. None of that prevents every blockage, but together it removes most of what causes them.

Will a plunger fix a blocked kitchen sink?
Sometimes, if the blockage is soft and close to the plughole. Block the overflow and the second bowl first, or you will just push water sideways. If a plunger clears it and it blocks again within a few weeks, the grease deposit further along the line is still there and only got a temporary channel through it.
Can I use bicarbonate of soda and vinegar instead of chemical cleaner?
It is safer for the pipe than caustic cleaner, which is a point in its favour, but the fizzing reaction is spent in seconds and has very little effect on set grease deeper in the line. Treat it as a deodoriser rather than a solution.
Who pays if I am renting?
